9 Things I Loved About Gu Family Book

Image
Hi Everybody, I'm Nabi!  I enjoyed guest-posting so much (my cathartic review of Faith is here ) that Kakashi kindly agreed to let me try posting under my own screen name.  This is my first solo post, which I hope you enjoy, and with luck perhaps it will not be my last! (Warning: this post contains Spoilers!!) So why  Gu Family Book , which ended weeks ago?  Because a few months back I decided to try starting my kDramas only after they had already finished airing -- the agony of weekly viewing was wearing me down!  And so, while the rest of you may have moved on, I'm still basking in the glow of the my most recent kDrama obsession. Gu Family Book  was by no means perfect (the ending was pretty lame, in particular), but on balance I would say it was more good than bad, and it was the first kDrama to crack my Top 20 list in months, coming in at #11.  In honor of the nine tails that we never saw, here are nine things I loved ...

PPL My Show! -- The Gu Family Book Edition

Image
bcook: After reeling from the Kdrama version of the Red Wedding (*GoT ref. #1) and reading all the accusations of Product-Placement (PPL) and selling of creative soul (that means you GFB writer) I started wondering.... how many products are they plugging in the last 10 minutes of Episode 24?? kakashi: People are actually googling this, you know. It really seems to be a hot topic in the Dramverse. I am feeling quite lucky I haven't watched this show, with all the outrage out there for how it's ended. But PPL spotting? Count me in. PPL in Gu Family Book Episode 24 Let's walk through and see what there is to see! We open the scene with an awesome panorama of all the things valuable to House of Gu (GoT ref. #2) and the first of many (oh my so many) PPL items. The Phone (Samsung): This is normal, regular ppl. Samsung basically = telephones when it comes to South Korea. Expected. They even found a way to get a samsung in a sageuk in Faith. Aww he saved her flower! I...

Gu Family Book Series: What is a Gisaeng/Kisaeng???

Image
I'll tell you what a Gisaeng is not. Gisaeng is not quite the Korean version of Geisha. Gisaeng were designated as 'slave/lower caste'. Many were trained in art, music, literature and medicine. They were 'owned' by the provincial governments. The well educated ones served in the royal palace and entertained noble men. Gisaeng were not technically prostitutes either at the beginning. Gisaeng do not exist in modern Korean Society.

What is a Gumiho/Kumiho/구미호??

aka. Why everybody is afraid of puppy LSG LSG = Lee Seung Gi First off, it may seem that this blog community is watching one of two show *cuts eyes at the squeecaps people* but that's not the case! Some of us *cough* me *cough* are watching Gu Family Book (GFB)! GFB is an epic story of a young gumiho who wants desperately to be human. Why? you ask. What's a gumiho? Why is it bad? Why can't he learn to love himself for who he is!!! What's not to love? Well, Gumiho stands for nine tailed fox. A Gumiho is a mythical creature ound in Korean, Japanese and Chinese fables/legend/myths. It's kind of like a bad fairy or a shapeshifter. The Gumiho is a carnivore and traditionally takes on the guise of a woman to trick/lure men to their doom (where have we heard that story before?)

Gu Family Book vs. Jang Ok-jung, Part I: The gif-Test

Image
Oh! The day is here! So exciting! Finally, there's a chance I'll find a new drama to blog about! (and by that I mean one that I can take seriously, not like When a Man Loves , which I will follow for the abs and the abs only) Remember my post about which drama to pick up next? Well, IRIS2 won - and see what good it did me (NO GOOD). Anyway, the method is fool proof, so I will use it again this time. I will watch both dramas at the same time. I will check in with them after 5, 10, 15, 30, 40, 55, and 62 minutes. While I took screen caps last time and then compared the three to pick one as the winner, I will create gifs this time; each 10 seconds long, with a frame count of 40 and a frame delay of 100. The drama with the most points wins. Here we go...   5 minutes in Gu Family Book shows us a group of people, all of them not in a happy mood. No, they seem to be stressed, even freaked out. I particularly like the look the two - I guess they are - servants give the lad...

Anticipating ... Sageuk Galore! and other stuff

If you are anything like me, you are mightly confused by all the new dramas that are about to start. This post is my way of ensuring I don't miss anything I don't want to miss. So lucky to have a blog for such moments of confusion. Yesterday, I shared my love for Special Affairs Team TEN2 , which premiers on April 14, and I guess there will be more about it on this blog very soon. Not sure how many episodes there will be, but I'm guessing 9-10.   >>Will definitely watch. In fact, cannot wait!    This weekend, on April 6, I Summon You, Gold is starting. Love the title ... NOT. I'll keep an eye on it, though, cause one of my favorite Korean actors is in it. Yes, it's Mr. Vampire Prosecutor, Yeon Jeong-hoon! I'm pretty sure the drama is crap, but I've watched a lot of crap just for some actor I like. And I can be very determined if I want to be. This drama is planned for 50 episodes. WTF, 50??! >>Will probably watch, but only after a ...
