The Problematic of the Unproblematic

On Yoo Na's Street Mary: (Not sure if this should go first. Please move this to the proper section? Thanks!  Oh, mary can go first, of course! Maaaaary, you go!!!! )  Yoo Na's Street!  That's what I'm watching right now and it's such a gem of a show.  It stars  Kim Ok Bin as the titular Yoo Na . She's a legendary pickpocket who lives in a compound with other neighbors who... uhm... don't work on the right side of the law either.  (Loved her in Blade and Petal and want to check this out just to see more of her.)

How far I've come since I started to watch KDramas about 3 years ago. I can read Hangul with ease, I even understand a fair bit of Korean, I love soju and kimchi, and I know many, many, many Korean actors and actresses by face and name. However, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to KPop. I do not own a single KPop CD and if I come in contact with it, it's through OSTs of dramas or some random YouTube video I watch (Or Facebook, where I have a few friends who are absolutely smitten with Onew, whoever that is). Not surprisingly, therefore, I was majorly challenged by the various idols that appear in Level 7 Civil Servant and IRIS2 combined. Who is this? And this? And this?? Oh, this is perfect! It's been a while since the release of the short version (2 months, in fact), but haste makes waste and Rome wasn't built in a day. Plus, Yoo Seung-hoo is now no longer among us (only for two years, fortunately), and Park Shin-hye is busy scuba diving and stuff. If you've missed one or the other, and/or have a crush on So Ji-sub, this is a must watch (just don't worry about the content). My interest in Big Bang began to develop when I decided to join a group of noonas for their Alive concert in November. Let's face it, Kdrama lover to Kpop lover is a natural progression. My specific interest in Seungri developed quite by accident. As a gag gift for the five of us who'd be attending, I decided to make Big Bang headbands. Miss Manners had taught me to let others pick first, so as things went, I was left with Seungri. No problem - at least his hair wasn't the color of Kool Aid (even if the cut did have a slightly Frankensteinish feel to it) and I really had no preference because honestly, at that time I could barely tell one from the other. I form attachments easily. Keeping an eye out for "my boy" at the concert was no easy task, since we were up in the nose bleed section and Seungri didn't get a lot of big screen coverage, nor did he raise the decibel level as high as the others when he walked out on stage. Hmmm....I was starting to...

I'll confess I don't know any of the girls on this show or any of their groups. *ducks to avoid bean paste cakes thrown by angry fans*. What? I'm a healthy, red blooded female...only the boys interest me. Anyway, the girls/women on this show are really interesting. They seem very personable and 'real'. The only weird thing about them is that at least two are older than the guys (not that much older but every woman knows guy's don't mature until they hit their 50s). Now most non-korean k-drama/k-pop fans know how important age is in Korean society (because it determines how you treat and talk to the other person) so it's a little strange that the PDs chose younger guys.*   It makes for great TV though.
